Improving care. Changing lives.

EDCO - Manville Partnership

A Program Serving Students with Asperger’s Syndrome and Related Challenges

The EDCO-Manville Partners Program provides comprehensive academic instruction as well as intensive social and life skills instruction to academically capable adolescents diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and related challenges. The program is designed to support students who are academically capable but who lack the social and behavioral skills needed to be successful in a public high school setting.

Full time special education teachers with expertise in Math, Science, Social Studies and English teach core academic subjects using instructional practices that promote successful management of the academic requirements and independence. Each student is provided with a laptop computer to use for assignments and research. Home/school communication regarding assignments is facilitated by the use of a password protected website.

An optional summer session provides students with the opportunity to explore job possibilities, visit college campuses, participate in community service and prepare for upcoming standardized tests such as the MCAS, PSAT, SAT and/or Massachusetts Driver’s License test. In addition, the Program offers an optional fifth year component that provides supported attendance in college courses and vocational opportunities.

Students participate in social skills, transition skills, and life skills groups on a weekly basis as well as community trips to practice social skills in real life settings. A full time School Adjustment Counselor leads skills groups and individual therapy sessions, and a full time Transition Coordinator facilitates employment training and secondary education opportunities. Pragmatics groups are led by a speech pathologist, and fitness sessions are led by a physical therapist. As determined on a case-by-case basis, students have the opportunity to attend Brookline High School classes, clubs and activities.
