Youth Cannabis Use: What Do We Know and What Should We Do?

Kevin M. Gray, MD

Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences,
Assistant Provost for Research Advancement,
Medical University of South Carolina

Summary: While scientific advances have yielded improved understanding of cannabinoid pharmacology and the physiological roles of the endogenous cannabinoid system, adolescents and families are often faced with considerable misinformation and disinformation regarding the potential risks and benefits of various cannabis and cannabinoid preparations across populations and across conditions. Adolescents are more likely than adults to initiate cannabis use, develop cannabis use disorder, and experience potentially lasting cannabis-associated adverse consequences. Adolescents with psychiatric disorders are particularly prone to adverse outcomes with cannabis use, and psychiatrists and other clinicians may lack updated information to inform practice and address the complicating role of cannabis use when working with adolescents and families. This talk provides an overview of this complex topic, translating advances in research to inform clinical practice.

Target Audience: Physicians (psychiatrists, pediatricians, child neurologists), psychologists, social workers, other mental health clinicians and researchers, and students and trainees.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1) Participants will be able to describe the risk and benefit of cannabis use.
2) Participants will be able to assess research on the impact of cannabis use in adolescents in conjunction with psychiatric disorders.

April 7, 2021 from 10AM to 11:15AM EST

This presentation will take place virtually on Zoom. You must pre-register to attend. Click here to pre-register.
