Cannabis and Mental Health in the Legalization Era

Kevin Hill, MD, MHS

Director, Division of Addiction Psychiatry, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center;

Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

Recent years have seen many states adopt more permissive cannabis policies. As of January 2020, 33 states and Washington, D.C. have adopted medical cannabis policies and 11 states and Washington, D.C. have adopted recreational cannabis policies. People are using cannabis for a myriad of medical conditions; for many of these, there is little or no evidence supporting the use of medical cannabis. Many of these people using cannabis recreationally or medically have co-occurring psychiatric conditions and it is unclear what the impact of cannabis use will be upon these individuals. In this lecture, Dr. Hill will review the evidence describing the risks associated with the use of cannabis in these individuals with co-occurring disorders along with the possible benefits.

Target Audience: Physicians (psychiatrists, pediatricians, child neurologists), psychologists, social workers, other mental health clinicians and researchers, and students and trainees.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1) Describe risks associated with chronic cannabis use.

2) Review evidence on medical cannabis use in psychiatric conditions.
